The department of Orthopaedics, Maharajah’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Vizianagaram is one of the premier departments in the field of orthopaedics in this part of the country. It is well equipped to treat various orthopaedic conditions, thus maintaining and improving the musculoskeletal health of the community. The department is well staffed for providing world-class education to the undergraduates and post-graduates. The staffs strive for utmost patient care, research and clinical teaching. Well organised sub-speciality services are also provided by the department by well trained specialists catering to the need of all age groups- from paediatric to geriatric. The faculties besides being excellent clinicians and teachers are good researchers who constantly strive hard to contribute novel concepts and ideas to the orthopaedic world. Sure, a career in Orthopaedics at MIMS Hospital is an extra-ordinary opportunity.

In addition, the department also maintains the smooth functioning of 24 hour trauma centre. Trauma clinic is conducted on all days. There is a 24 hour trauma service supported blood bank facility, thus emergency cases are attended as 24 hours service by our duty specialists. The operation theatre is equipped with state-of-art facilities like C-arm image intensifier, arthroplasty, arthroscopy and spine instruments. The trauma operating room with sophisticated operating tables and image intensifier facilitate state-of-art fixation of fractures. (The department also supervises the artificial limb centre which provides custom-made orthosis and prosthesis.) Well-equipped physiotherapy and rehabilitation unit with state-of-art facilities come under the supervision of the department.

  • The educational goal of the orthopaedic surgery department is to provide the foundation for a lifetime of learning and practice of orthopaedic surgery, and to produce graduates who exemplify the highest ideals of our profession. It is our purpose to excel in research, education and clinical service, while maintaining the highest ethical standards and providing compassionate healthcare services.

  • We strive to be the hospital of choice throughout the region for health care and employment by providing excellence in patient care, education, and research, with an emphasis on highly specialized care.

Vision

  • To construct independent independent orthopaedic block accommodating 200 patients with 6 laminar air flow operation theatres along with other sophisticated and latest equipment.
  • Our vision is to create an exemplary treatment facility such that no patient from this area needs to go to higher centres like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad.
  • We are planning to provide latest treatment for all kinds of Orthopaedic conditions referred from peripheral hospitals using best practices.
  • We have to start a 24 hours trauma centre equipped with cutting edge technology, blood bank and imaging services including CT,MRI etc.

Department of orthopaedics at MIMS is headed by Professor M. Venkateswara Rao and Professor S. David Raju had published one article in International Journal and seven articles in national journals.

Professor M. Venkateswara Rao has been elected unanimously as the president for OSSAP (Orthopaedic Surgeons Society of Andhra Pradesh) for 2016 – 17.

  • He Chaired sessions in Indogerman Orthopaedic foundation in 2013. (Compound fractures)
  • He gave oration in national conference held in Hyderabad in 2014.
  • He conducted the state conference in Nellore under guidance on 2015-2016.  All the P.G’s presented papers in Nellore State Conference.
  • He Chaired Session in the last orthopaedics National conference. He has worked for the longest tenure as the president of Government Doctors Association – AP.
  • Professor S. Sasibushana Rao had completed his prestigious German Fellowship for a period of 3 months for June session of 2013– 14.
  • Professor S. Sasibushana Rao had completed his American Fellowship in Ranawath Institute Of Joint Replacement Surgery  for a period of 3 months for October session of 2016 – 17.
    • Dr. S. Appala Raju Asst. Professor had participated in Hip Surgeries from 14th September 2016 to 14 October 2016 at Univerisity of “INNSBRUCK” –  Austria.
    • Our Postgraduates had won the prestigious quiz from Indogerman orthopaedics foundation in 2013.

They had presented 4 papers in National conference. 6 papers in State conference.

We have been participating interdepartmental scientific sessions, It is proud to inform that most of the presentations our P.G’s got Best Paper Awards.

  • Our Postgraduate ( Dr. B. Anil Kumar ) won the best paper award from MIMS for Academic Year 2014 – 15.
  • Our Postgraduate ( Dr. T. Bhanu Prabha ) won the best paper award from MIMS for Academic Year 2015 – 16.
  • Our Postgraduate ( Dr. P. Karthik ) won the best paper award from MIMS for Academic Year 2016 – 17.
  • One of Our 1st Batch of Postgraduate Dr. K. Kishore had stood first in the post graduate exam held by Dr. N.T.R Health University.

The Dept had been catering the services of paediatric orthopaedics, Sports Injuries, Spine, Joint Replacements, arthroscopic Surgeries along with Trauma Care and has been the tertiary referral center for the district of Vizianagaram has been effectively running the SADAREM Scheme (To Identify disability people)

We had conducted successfully two Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Zonal CME.
